About C.A.M.P.

The Centre started on 21 May 2004, when the academic programme was formulated and classes started (slightly late) in the academic year 2004/05. The semester now starts on the first Monday of September for registration and the second Monday for teaching and ends in early January (depending on the dates of the Eids). There is then a break during which those students who have to take Comprehensive Examinations prepare and appear for the Written and Oral Comprehensives. The next semester starts in the end of January for registration and early February for teaching and ends in mid-June. The major Comprehensive examination is held after the summer break of 2 months towards the end of August.
A regular seminar series is being run since the middle of the first semester of CAMP. There have been a number of outside speakers and many CAMP faculty members have presented talks in this series. The Centre has also had a number of visitors. In particular, there is an ongoing collaboration of this Centre with the Centre for Differential Equations, Continuum Mechanics and Applications of the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, from which there have been two visits (one of 1 month and one of a few days). There have also been two Workshops/Symposia organized by CAMP.

The main objective of the centre is to supply much-needed human resources in the vital fields of mathematics and physics. In order to provide the potential PhD students with a broad base of mathematics that will enable them to conduct worthwhile research in some mainstream area, the centre offers a wide range of courses from its major thrust areas, which include Differential Equations, Mathematical Physics , Engineering Mathematics and Optimization Theory. The students are required to complete 48 credit hours of course work that include 15 credit hours of core courses: MCO-801 to 805. The remaining 33 credit hours of course work is elective. Of these 33 credit hours at least 21 credit hours are required to consist of regular courses from 810 to 989.

CAMP is a postgraduate-studies-only centre with MPhil leading to PhD Programmes both in Mathematics and Physics. Applicants with first division from matric to MSc (in Mathematics or Physics or a four year degree in a related field) may apply and after fulfilling the eligiblity criteria, are required to clear an admission test.
